Real people and what they say

How do I find people to talk to?

Checked on 6 Oct 20263 min read

Why it works this way

The product finds places where your people gather and writes the message to send them, and you do the asking.

"Go and talk to people" is true and useless if you do not know where they are. So the product looks for the places your group gathers and writes the message, because finding people is where tests stall. The asking stays yours.

What we gave up: a menu of every possible way to reach people. You get a short list for your group, each with how well it fits.

What it is

Reaching people is where tests tend to stall. So a test that involves people comes with a tab that points to where your people gather, who you already know, and a message to send them. It nudges you toward real conversations and sends nothing itself.

The tab is the first one in the Guide column on a test page. It is named for the test's first move, so on an interview it reads Find people, and on other tests it may read "Line up who to ask" or "Find customers to serve by hand".

How to use it

  1. Open the test, press Guide, then the first tab.
  2. Press Find places to ask. The note beside it says it uses a research credit.
  3. Start with Start with your own network: suggestions for people you can ask this week.
  4. Add your city. It is pre-filled from an approximate location and you can change or clear it. Press Look near me to add the in-person places (meetups, chapters, events).
  5. Read Where they gather: online communities, each with a link and a label for how well it fits your group (Strong fit, Some fit, Loose fit).
  6. Copy the Message to send and make it yours. A note says where to place the ask for your kind of test.
  7. If you want to pay to reach people, Or pay to reach them lists services that do that.

A search uses a research credit, and this tab searches nothing until you press Find places to ask. A search that fails is normally refunded. Your results are saved with the test, so returning to it costs nothing.

What it will never do

  • Contact anyone for you. It lists places and writes words. Sending is yours.
  • Pass off a loose match as a good one. A place that fits loosely says "Loose fit".

If something looks off

  • The tab shows one line and a button. That is the first step, not a fault. This tab searches nothing until you press Find places to ask.
  • "Couldn't pull the list together just now." Press Try again.
  • "Nothing nearby." Try another city, or lean on your own network and the online places.
  • No Find people tab. Some tests have nobody in them (a cost check, a scenario walk). They have a different first move, or none.
  • Out of credits, or a live search skipped at a busy time. The panel says why, in words.
  • A viewer on a shared board can read what was found and cannot run a search.
